Innocent Blood

Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, so that it may be well with you. Deuteronomy 19:13

As Christians I think that we agree that abortion is murder, the shedding of innocent blood. As I have read and listened to the stories of many who have had one over the years, I realize that most women know that they have killed someone precious and dear to them – even though they had never met the child in their womb.

I have heard stories of fear of parents finding out. There are those who felt forced by the only people they believed would have been their help and support. And, there are people who felt they just weren’t ready or perhaps did not think they would be financially able to raise a child.

Over the last few weeks I have been paying closer attention to the abortion debate because of a bill proposed in Oklahoma.  SB1118 would have made abortion illegal in that state. The truth is that according to God’s law, it is already illegal. There is a group of men and women committed to abolishing abortion (the group is appropriately named Abolish Human Abortion) that are trying to make it illegal according to man’s law.

The most baffling part of what happened in Oklahoma is that the “Pro-Life” Community did not help them or get behind this bill. They were certain the bill could not pass, so they would not support it. Rather than being concerned about what is right before God, they were concerned about what would “work” before men!

These are professing Christians allowing the world to think that there is something pleasing to God in limiting the time frame for “legal” abortions, or that God would want to make sure that the murders are performed in sterile environments. How do we get around Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder”?

I look at Isaiah and Jeremiah, prophets that God called and used, to take His Word to other individuals, towns, and even nations, in their day. They took the Word of God to men just as God had given it to them. They often knew that it was not going to “work”, that they were going to be thrown out of the towns they visited, that they might never see what they would consider repentance in their day.

They spoke the Word of God anyway, just as He gave it to them. God judged the nations that refused to listen to His messengers.

Why would we expect things to be any different for today’s Christian messenger warning the nation (or state) that what they are doing is a direct violation of the Law of God?

I pray the Lord will open the eyes of the blind, many of them claim to know Him and even to be “Pro-life.”

As Christians, why would we not want to abolish, rather than regulate, abortion?

Why do we care more about what will “work” than what is righteous?
