Awesome Deeds

Psalm 66:5

Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.

My husband I recently moved to a new town. (Location, Location, Location). It was hard work after living in our last house for 24 years. Both of our children grew up there and we had accumulated a lot of stuff. I loved that house and my old neighborhood but my husband clearly felt a call to go from that home.

Now, my in-laws also moved just before we did. They had also lived in their home for a very long time and had accumulated even more stuff than we had. All of it had to be sorted through and cleaned out as they were moving to a much smaller place.

So, are you wondering where the awesome deeds of God are in these moves? Well, we started all of this in mid May. We have been a part of two major moves – one on a really rainy day, and had many, many trips back and forth between houses. The manpower in the two moves involved at least 30 people (some helping in both moves and some traveling many miles to come help clean or unpack for a day). In all of that God protected backs and legs and lungs (though there were plenty of sore muscles). He provided safety in travel. I have bad dust and mold allergies and I have not suffered any bad affects from the dust and mold of two old houses. And, in just a couple of weeks I’m beginning to feel like this new place is home.

All of this is the grace of God. We like to think that our planning or our great personalities attracted all this help and organization. We tend as a people to think that we were fortunate or lucky. Belief in a sovereign God eliminates the possibility of luck. The truth is that God has blessed us in a very big way with family and friends who He has given a heart to help.

When we look back at all God has done in history as well as our individual lives and we think of some of His greater and even more awesome deeds this moving thing may seem small. But God is faithful in all things to those who love Him. He has reminded me of this many times but the moves stand out because they involved so many people and a lot of risk. As I watched I prayed that God would protect each one carrying the big furniture or the little stuff on wet, slippery sidewalks and streets. And He did.

Often we see these truths about our God and we tend to either say a quiet thank you or we take it for granted. But when we’re willing to give God the glory in the small things of life it becomes easier to see Him at work in the larger, harder circumstances. So today I want to do as the Psalmist suggested and speak of God’s awesome deeds and declare His greatness – even in something as minor in life as a physical move.

Psalm 146:5, They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.
