Trusting…

“Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child           will by no means enter it.” Mark 10:5 (NKJV)

Our kitchen fridge is broken and awaiting a repairman. The food was moved to a fridge in the basement.

This morning my five year old granddaughter came into my office and asked if I could turn on the basement light. I knew why.

I grabbed my coffee cup and went to help her. When I got to the top of the steps she was already over half-way down, descending into the dark, perfectly sure that the light would be on before she got there.

What trust!

The example was so real to me, as if I could hear the question, “Do you trust the Lord like this?”

Over the years God has been so faithful to us that I should have more reason to trust Him than my granddaughter does to trust me. Am I willing to step into a dark place knowing I can trust God to illuminate it?

All of the resistance I have spoken in my head and through my lips to and about the Lord, I can see as a lack of deep faith in Him. I am grateful that every time He is faithful, He grows my ability to trust Him.

This morning God gave me a living picture of childlike faith. Is that our faith?

Whatever it is we are looking for, do we trust our great God to light the way?

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

  1. I love how sometimes children can be the perfect models for how we are to live in Jesus. Their trust is humbling and inspiring. Beautiful thoughts, Beth. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Hi Beth. This is a special story. I love how God teaches us through simple stories. I remember way back when I was driving my son to preschool, We were late so I told him he should pray we make all the lights because his faith is better than mine. My faith was too tainted with life’s issues. We made all the lights but one.

  3. I have been learning to trust him more; it was difficult during my intense season of grief. The biggest area I need to trust him in better is my singleness. I love this picture of childlike trust!

    1. Candice, I have seen the difficult time you have had but have also seen your faith as you have reached out to God’s people, your sisters and brothers in the Lord, to be your support and “hold your arms up in this battle.” Faith overcomes the world. This child-like trust is what I pray our Lord will give you as you walk through this time with Him at your side. May He bless you as you walk faithfully. In fact, look for those blessings because they will be there!

  4. Great analogy, Beth. We are often hesitate to step into the dark. I think many times we want God to illuminate our path with light FIRST. But where’s the trust and faith in that?

    1. Right, Karen, I have thought it would be nice if, in His grace, God would just leave me a note with the next step I am to take. No note yet, but plenty of guidance when I step out in faith. Thanks for commenting.
