We Should Know

bright idea

We should know shouldn’t we?

We repeat over and over that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. So, why are we surprised when He is? I was thinking about the empty tomb today. The guards who were assigned to protect it didn’t know they were trying to keep the living God from being kidnapped after His death. They thought they were dealing with a crazy man who thought He was the King of the Jews. But, they had seen how loyal His friends had been and were afraid they might make His words appear to be true. He had said in life that He would rise on the third day after His death.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary had heard that He would rise again yet they readied the spices to prepare His body for burial. They forgot or they didn’t see how it could be true. They thought he must have been wrong but wanted to treat His body with respect.

When the ladies arrived at the empty tomb “there were two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning.” In Luke 24:6-8 these men remind the women what Jesus had said, “He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise. And they remembered His words.”

What I saw today as I was contemplating these things is that we are just like these women. It isn’t until after the Lord acts that we see that He’s doing just what we knew He would. We either deny His Truths or we see Him as much weaker or not as wise as He has told us He is. But, in hindsight we see that He is strong, wise, and consistent with the Truth is His Word.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary had heard the words right from the mouth of Jesus that He would rise but they forgot. Many of us read our Bibles everyday and have a regular prayer life with the Lord – but we forget. The nature of man has not changed.

Part of the good news about God is that He never changes either. He does exactly what He promises He will do. He says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive us. (1 John 1:9) He says that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead that we will be saved (Romans 10:9). He says He is coming again to create a New Heaven and a New Earth and that He’s preparing a place for each one who has believed. (Revelation 21:2 and John 14:2).

It is hard for us to believe what we don’t see but that is how the Bible defines faith. The women at the tomb didn’t remember, or didn’t believe, that Jesus was going to rise from the dead. Do we believe what He tells us in His Word? Has He EVER not given us what we needed when we needed it? Often He does wait for us to ask, to come to Him but He is waiting with outstretched arms. If an unbeliever comes saying, “Show me your Truth” it is because God has offered faith and we can trust Him to respond. If a believer comes saying, “Help me,” He is there waiting to answer the call.

We should know it’s all true just as the women should have know it’s true == it’s in His Word.

He is our ever-present help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1

Jesus lives! He is risen just as He said (Luke 24:6).

He is seated at the right hand of God interceding for us (Romans 8:34).

If He is for us who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

He will protect and provide for each one of His people (Psalm 91:14, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Psalm 65:9).

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Believe it and don’t forget it.
